40 Years of Wildlife Stories: Embracing Motherhood in the Wild

2024 marks our 40th year in business, and in the next few posts I’d like to reflect on some of the jobs that have made the past four decades truly special to me.

Motherhood

This photo holds a special place in my heart. It captures the essence of motherhood as the raccoon mom peers out of our reunion box, with her baby peacefully asleep on her front paw. It beautifully exemplifies a mother’s role as a protector, provider, and mentor to her offspring.

On certain occasions, mother raccoons opt to make our heated release box their temporary home instead of going through relocating each baby to an alternate den site. The reasons behind this choice remains a mystery, but we’re completely fine with it. What matters most is the joy of seeing the family reunited and safe under our care. Although she’ll eventually seize the opportunity to lead her family out of the box, for now, we’re content knowing they’re together and secure.
